This site is part of an on-going project at Guilford College in Greensboro,
North Carolina. The purpose of this project was initially to setup new bluebirds boxes, and afterwards monitor, collect
data and maintain them. I started monitoring the bluebirds on campus as part of an ornithology project and then
continued to incorporate it into my other classes. For Intro to Environmental Science with professor Angie Moore, I
along with my partner Marvin Morales decided to use the funds provided by the Biology and Environmental Studies
departments to purchase new bluebird boxes to add to the already existing group on campus. With the help of professor
Lynn Moseley we strategically placed them around campus in the fall and I started monitoring in the spring when nesting/mating
season began.
This semester, for Modern Environmental Problems with professor Kyle Dell
we were asked to choose a Values In Action project incorporating atleast one of the Guilford College values.
I chose Diversity with the idea of encouraging our campus to be diverse not only in the types of student, faculty and
staff we have on campus but also in promoting species diversity.
For these projects, I have monitored our boxes for the past
two years and will continue to do so the spring and summer 2009. It has been an amazing experience and I hope that when
I am no longer able it is a project that will be passed on and continued.
